The Black Church, formerly the Church of Saint Mary, was thus called after a fire blackened its walls in 1689. The walls of the church are more than 21-metre-tall and are supported by buttresses. The total surface of the church is more than 3,400 sq. m. The construction of this imposing church began in 1385 and lasted for approximately a hundred years. The church houses an ancient painting dating from 1476, which represents the Holy Virgin to whom the church was dedicated. The great organ, made in 1839, is the most important in South East Europe and is the main attraction of the church during the concerts organized here. The church also houses a unique collection of Oriental rugs from the 17th and 18th centuries.
